It’s been a busy first term here at Ashwell House. After our lovely annual Christmas Carol Concert, most Ashwellians went away for their winter break, and we hope to see them return fresh and rested and with many plans for the New Year!
At Ashwell House we strive to learn, share and contribute as much as possible with another, which is why Ashwellians are constantly looking for new ways to educate and better themselves.
Last term there was a number of Ashtalk’s organized by our Culture Hub Committee including:
- Truths, Myth and Legend in Christmas Literature with Ralph Moore – a retired English teacher. This talk focused on the different portrayals of Christmas in Literature over the years. It was perfect for getting the residents in the Christmas spirit.
- Ways to improve wellbeing for student life with Tracy Ampah (MSc in Positive Psychology.) This was a favourite amongst our residents as the girls had the opportunity to learn about their individual character strengths and how they could improve themselves in other aspects.
- Evolution and the first Humans by Dr Charles Breeze (Altius Institute for Biomedical Sciences, USA,) a fascinating talk about evolution and humanity.
- Networking and Social Skills for a successful career in Academia by Dr Alexis Cullen (Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience, King’s College London) where Dr. Cullen talked openly about the pros and cons of being in academia and shared some helpful tips about networking – which the residents found really useful.
Ashwellians also created a debate group to discuss and learn about a wide range of political, philosophical, and moral topics. Debates last term included: Should convicted felons be allowed to vote?
