A well-rounded education
We are inspired by St John Henry Newman’s idea of University as a time to develop a broad, well-rounded education, which teaches students “to think and to reason and to compare … and to analyse.”
We offer you the environment and support you need to make the most of your studies. In addition we organise a wide range of enrichment activities – from socials and celebrations to talks, films, concerts, cultural evenings and excursions, as well as spiritual activities.
Spiritual Activities
The warm, family atmosphere of Ashwell House is inspired by St Josemaria Escriva, the founder of Opus Dei, a Personal Prelature of the Catholic Church. Opus Dei helps ordinary men and women find holiness in their everyday work, study and family life. In Ashwell, this means helping students to discover a deeper meaning in their studies and wider life, through service to others and witnessing the richness of the Catholic faith. The Christian formation offered in Ashwell is optional and available to anyone interested.
The Chaplain of the Residence celebrates Holy Mass regularly and is available for spiritual guidance and the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Times for guided prayer in the chapel are scheduled regularly. Morning of reflections are organised for those of any faith who wish to join.
Ashwell also hosts weekend silent retreats for students to have the opportunity to spend time with God in prayer and reflection. The retreats are guided by staff and a Catholic priest. Retreats are held throughout the year at Wickenden Manor in Sussex and are an excellent opportunity to put life in perspective, rest and reflect.
